What Are Damages?
In personal injury lawsuits, damages are a type of monetary award paid to an individual who has suffered harm because of another party’s negligent actions. In general, there are three types of damages that may be awarded:
- General damages – compensation for an individual’s pain and suffering
- Punitive damages – compensation for reckless actions
- Special damages – compensation for an actual, quantifiable loss of money
In most personal injury cases, individuals will only qualify for general and special damages. In gross negligence cases, individuals may qualify for all three types of damages.
