The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has announced that they are fining an Alabama contractor for three safety violations that caused workers to be caved in an struck by hazardous objects while installing sewer lines.
Trax Development, LLC, was fined $112,000 for failing to provide employees with safe means to enter and exit the trench and failure to provide cave-in protection.
Another serious violation that they were fined $3,000 for, was not giving the employees appropriate head protection. Therefore, they exposed the employees to falling rocks while in the trench. The size of the trench that is being regarded to was 11 feet deep and 200 feet long. OSHA has regulations that state that all trenches that are deeper than 5 feet must be protected from collapse.
